This morning Owen was released from the NICU and we were able to have him in our room for a good portion of the day. He got to meet his grandparents and several aunts and uncles. It was a great day but a very busy one. We were amazed by how many people came in and out of the room throughout the day (nurses, doctors, techs, administrative staff, family, etc). A lot of it is a blur but it's nice to know we're in good hands here. We are especially grateful to Sara, a lactation consultant with the breastfeeding clinic here at Carle. She spent a lot of time with us today trying to figure out why Owen wasn't eating. He showed such promising signs last night during our visit to the NICU but today he wasn't responding to anything. She tried feeding him formula through a syringe, formula through a bottle, colostrum through a bottle, and even just giving him a pacifier to suck on but nothing was working. She pumped out his stomach and got ~6 ml amniotic fluid out, but that didn't help. In the end it turned out that he was constipated and once he passed a myconeum plug, he was back to the alert and hungry little piranha we witnessed at the NICU. We also found out that the bacterial culture they ran on Owen's side of the placenta came out positive, so he had to be taken to the nursery occasionallyh to have antibiotics delivered through his IV.
